Tita McCart has had a very productive few weeks. Last week Tita secured the Dutch Seniors Matchplay Lochemse Golf & Country Club beating Renee de Ruiter from Noord-Nederlandse Golf club in the final 3&2. Tita is dominating this event, having won it 5 out of the last 6 years. This followed her victory last month in the Dutch Seniors Strokeplay Championship. Playing at Koninklijke Haagsche G & CC, our Sundridge Park stalwart took the title a full seven strokes ahead of her nearest competitor.
A bit of non golfing news now as our
John Macklen went down on bended knee on Sunday and his long term girlfriend, the lovely
Claire said yes! Many congratulations to you both.
It was the tightest of finishes in the Stableford last Saturday on the East Course.
Steve Instrall took the top spot with 40pts on countback from
Dan Dring on countback. It would be remiss of me not to mention what could have been for our +1 handicapper Mr Dring. Dan was seven under after fourteen, only succumbing to bogeys on 16 & 18.
David Lawrence was third with 39pts with
Luke Spooner 4th on 38pts.
Last Monday saw the arrival of our Swedish junior friends from Taby Golf Club, north of Stockholm.
We played a friendly stableford competition that afternoon with great scores from
Ellis Cameron who had 45 points playing off 5, that's 4 under par gross around the East course, and also 42 points from
Charlie Reynolds, sparking a great run of golf for him throughout the week...
Monday saw a visit to Littlestone Golf Club, a good friend of Sundridge. For the Swedes this was the first chance for them to experience links golf. The wind was up and the course was bouncy providing the Swedes with a challenge and they loved. It was a cracking day which ended with dinner in McDonalds, something that the Swedes also loved. What 13-year-old doesn't love a McDonalds dinner.
Tuesday saw a trip into London for a bit of sightseeing, we went on the London Eye which the Swedes really enjoyed, we saw the changing of the guard at Horse Guards Parade and we also got a good look at Buckingham Palace. For many of the Swedes it was the first time in London and they loved the chance to see and photograph all the iconic sights London has to offer.
Wednesday saw a trip to Tandridge with a 4-way club match with Knole, Tandridge, Sundridge and Taby. The course was in stunning condition and a real treat for all the players involved.
Thursday saw our Jesper Parneivk Trophy match against our Swedes. We played foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. Foursomes was played over the West course with Sundridge narrowly coming out 3-2 leaders going into the afternoon, thanks in part to a great dormie down comeback from
Louie Johnson and
Johnny Eades.
As the great week of weather came to an end the singles began. 10 singles matches were to be played and it would take a good performance from Sundridge to hold off the Swedish comeback. Great performances from our players saw Sundridge come out on top 9-6 overall to retain the trophy. Both teams played their hearts out and it could have gone either way.
A fantastic week and we are looking forward to our trip next year to Sweden already.
Every so often a junior has a run of results that makes you stand up at take attention. This has happened recently to young
Charlie Reynolds who has dropped his handicap from starting the year at 21.1, he has now dropped to 11.7, no small feat.
He won the nett comp at South Kent futures 81 (65) at Weald of Kent GC, at the Sundridge junior open an 86 (71) and 81(66), got him 2nd overall in the nett. He came 2nd in the Kent handicap junior comp at West Malling with an 85 nett 66 (sadly he got 'pipped' by a nett 57). But he did get awarded the most promising junior Kent golfer trophy, selected by the Kent coaches present. A name for the future.
Keep up the good work Charlie...
The European Tour returns to Scotland this week for the Paul Lawrie Match Play on the Fidra course at Archerfield Links in North Berwick.
The inaugural tournament in 2015 won by Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who beat Robert Karlsson 1 up in the final.
The Thai is not in the field this year so we will see a new champion crowned.
This year's event will once again see 64 players competing, with BMW PGA Champion Chris Wood and Nordea Masters winner Matt Fitzpatrick headlining.
Both are in the frame for the European Ryder Cup team and a strong performance here, in a matchplay format, will all-but secure them a seat on the plane to Hazeltine.
Scottish Open winner Alex Noren is also in the field.
There are plenty of chances for a home win, with Paul Lawrie, Marc Warren, Richie Ramsay, Stephen Gallacher, Craig Lee, Scott Jamieson and David Drysdale all competing.
The course at Archerfield will make for beautiful viewing as it winds its way through pine trees and then into more linksy ground.
Player watch:
Chris Wood - At 25 in the world and having won the European Tour's flagship event at Wentworth in May, Wood is the favourite. The Bristolian reached the quarter finals last year, going out to David Howell.
Matt Fitzpatrick - The Nordea Masters winner is the second-highest ranked player in the field. Fitzpatrick won the US Amateur 2013 in a similar matchplay format so he has to be considered one of the favourites this week.
David Howell - Howell finished 3rd last year, beating Marc Warren in the consolation match after going out to Robert Karlsson on the 20th hole in the semi-final.
