Club news

Sundridge Park played host to 30 teams of three ladies competing for the Ladies Team Open title, with entrants coming from all over Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Essex.

The winners and now two-time champions were once again the team from Stock Brook Manor, Paula D'urso, Barbara Stuchbery and Isobel O'Brien with 83 pts. Second place went to the team of Janet Gill, Judy McKemey and Celine Graciet from Brighton & Hove GC with 80 pts. In third place, the team of Helen Johnson, Julie Wilson and Alison O'Neil from Sidcup GC scored 77 pts.

The stableford team competition saw the best two scores from three on each hole count. With the defending champions from Stock Brook Manor seeking to retain their title.

As well documented my sister-in-law and golfing student Paula was part of the successful team and the good news is, as Sundridge Park were not participating I don't have to make any apologies.

There was a slight clerical error last week as I printed the incorrect winner of the RAF medal, so step forward Frank Bristow who won with a nett 65. Please accept my apologies Frank.

An excellent 41pts saw one of our newer members Michael Thomas take the top spot in the MacMillan Trophy on a beautiful Saturday on the West course. Shaun Ryan took the runner-up spot with 39pts and Pat Owen took third place from Gary Bowers on countback, both having shot 36pts.

Thought of the week

Just what was needed

We can't think of a more deserving winner than Justin Rose, golf's first Olympic champion since 1904 - a huge congratulations to him on winning gold after a thrilling final-round duel with Henrik Stenson.

Make no mistake, golf needed this positive outcome after several high-profile golfers decided not to compete in Rio.

"That felt better than anything I've ever won. It was the best tournament I've ever done," said Rose - a former US Open champion let's not forget.

"Hopefully we've shown Brazil what golf is about. I'm glad it was close. Not for my nerves. For golf."

Rose relished the opportunity to represent Great Britain, arriving in Brazil a week before the Olympics officially started to ensure he was part of the opening ceremony.

Anyone who follows the Englishman on Twitter will know what competing in the Olympics meant and how genuine he is about helping to grow the game.

With a global audience of approximately 4 billion, it's fair to say Rose, Stenson and the rest of the Olympic field put on a fantastic show, doing a superb job of showcasing everything that's good about the game.

Jordan Spieth has already tweeted his ambition to represent USA in Tokyo in four years, which tells us a lot. Roll on 2020!
