Pro's Day
With all the indifferent weather we have been experiencing recently, I was worried especially as I was driving to the club early on Sunday morning in pouring rain to put the final preparations to Pro's Day. Had the weathermen failed yet again as the forecast was of dry and sunny weather was the order of the day? I needn't have worried, the clouds parted just in time as 195 players (fantastic support, especially on a bank holiday weekend, I thank you so much) took to both courses to try to win the 2014 edition of the competition.
It was Harry Cummings Jnr with an excellent score of 41 points who took top spot. The full results are listed below.
Ladies prize - Julie Carpenter
Plus a special mention to Bob Stevens who was a great sport, collecting the wooden spoon for a total of..................well let's just forget about that, it was a just a bad day at the office.
Karl Morris Presentation Evening
Thank you for the support also on Tuesday evening as Mind Guru, Karl Morris gave an excellent presentation for 60 members in the clubhouse. The goal for Karl was for all of us to walk away with one idea to help us with our golf, from the fantastic feedback I've had, he more than achieved that.
The next event coming up via the pro shop, is the FootJoy shoe fitting day on Saturday 22nd June, please book your place asap on 02084605540, or click here to request your fitting slot.
The following South East Association inter-club matches were played on Wednesday 21st May, with Sundridge Park coming out on top in both matches.
Sundridge Park Trophy - Sundridge Park Beat Shooters Hill 4.5 x 3.5 away at Shooters Hill.
Blackheath Trophy - Sundridge Park Beat Cherry Lodge 5 x 3 Home at Sundridge Park.
Congratulations to both teams on their victories, and to the West Kent Cup team who won a few weeks back. Details regarding the 2nd round of the SEA matches will be posted following the closing date.
The Gray Trophy unfortunately lost their match at home, better luck next year guys.
Bank Holiday Mixed Greensomes
20 pairs took part in today's bank holiday mixed which was played as a team event. The modified greensomes format was a challenge to some! However, those that worked through the format enjoyed the day in spite of some unpleasant squalls during the afternoon.
The team comprising Helen & Martin Kennedy, Farah Diggens and David Brenes took second place by scoring one point more than Lyn Baimbridge, Richard Jones, Christine Edgar and John Hambly (64 and 63 points respectively). The clear winners, with 66 points, were Betty Galbraith, Alan Speed and Sandra & Wally Nadin.
The European Tour heads for Sweden this week and the 24th edition of the Nordea Masters. Finland's Mikko Ilonen defends the title at PGA Sweden National in Malmo. A strong field has assembled and the home nation will be well represented with World Number 2 Henrik Stenson and the on-form Jonas Blixt leading the charge.
Other notable players in the field include: Thomas Bjorn, looking to bounce back from a disappointing final round at Wentworth last week; Scotland's Stephen Gallacher aiming to move up towards an automatic qualifying spot for September's Ryder Cup; and Miguel Angel Jimenez, the evergreen Spaniard harbouring similar ambitions.
First contested on the European Tour in 1991, newly crowned US Senior PGA Champion Colin Montgomerie was the inaugural winner of the Nordea Masters, then called the Scandinavian Masters. Since then there have been many notable victors, including Nick Faldo, Lee Westood, Graeme McDowell, Adam Scott and Luke Donald.
Last year at Bro Hoff Slott Golf Club, Mikko Ilonen produced four superb rounds to hold off the challenge of home player Jonas Blixt. The Finnish golfer won by three shots, posting a four-round total of 21-under-par.
The tournament will be contested over PGA Sweden National's Lakes Course. Opened for play in 2010 it's a superb Kyle Phillips design featuring large bunkers and water hazards. The fairways and greens are populated with natural creeping bent grasses. It's the first time this venue has been used for the tournament.
The weather forecast for the week looks reasonable with only a vague chance of some showers. Temperatures should be in the mid teens centigrade with a moderate breeze.
Player Watch:
Jonas Blixt - Second in this event last year, the Swede is proving himself to be a world-class player. He had a decent showing at Wentworth last week and was runner-up in this year's U.S. Masters.
Shane Lowry - Runner-up last week in the BMW PGA Championship, Lowry showed some excellent form and a superb touch around the greens. He also won sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open, held at Walton Heath on Monday. Look for him to feature again this week.
Marcel Siem - Siem could have won last week at Wentworth if he'd kept the errors of his cards. He finished bogey, double bogey on day one and suffered two double bogeys on day two. If he can clean up his act, he could be a factor in Sweden.
