Data protection

You have nothing to fear

Recently, you may have seen a few requests in our weekly emails asking you to create your golfing profile or confirm your email address for GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) purposes.

As you might be aware, GDPR is new legislation coming into effect at the end of May, so we are taking the opportunity now to update your details. Not only does this give us the chance to confirm that we have your correct information, but it also provides us with the ability to personalise your weekly emails to suit your golfing preferences. If you have not yet updated your details, please do so now. It will take you less than a minute.

Club news

The results speak for themselves

On Sunday, 8 April 2018 our newly refurbished Clubhouse was re-opened by our Club Captain Tony Lopategui, Ladies Captain Rose Yazdani and Senior Past Captain Ron Cox.

The refurbishment of the Clubhouse was completed in just three months and the results speak for themselves. The refurbishment includes a new fitted out Kitchen, function suite and extended members lounge and bar, plus the new Terrace.

To complement our fabulous Clubhouse the members were introduced to new Head Chef, Simon Caple.

Competition news

Midweek Stableford - West Course

There was a tie at the top in the Midweek Stableford played over the West course. Three players tied at the top and it was Gary Bowley who just pipped Peter Wilder and James Brosnan on countback all having shot 35pts.

A special mention to Jamie Patterson who shot 39pts but as a junior member was ineligible to win a prize, Jamie finished bogey, bogey but still reduced his handicap to 3.9.

Sunday Medal - East Course

An outstanding nett 65 saw Tom Gamble win the Medal played on the East course on Sunday and in the process dropping his handicap 1.8 to 7.7 and it could have been even better with Tom taking a double bogey on the 17th.

Danny Smith took the runner-up spot with a nett 71. Stuart Quinlan took third place on countback with a nett 73. In the Silver Division Martin Johnson was top dog with a nett 71, runner-up was Tommy White with a nett 73 with Johnson Yuen third on countback with a nett 76.

Fitting news

The perfect blend for John Pullen

John has been looking for the perfect set of irons for some time now, he recently reverted to an old trusty set of Cobra irons but felt he was missing out on new technologies.

Using Our FlightScope launch monitor we tested these trusty steel shafted and narrow soled Cobra’s. We also tested a set of TaylorMade Burner irons he purchased a few years ago with lightweight graphite shafts, large heads with a wide sole.

All the adverts and magazines tell us this is what John needs but he has never been keen on the feel of the graphite shaft and appearance of the club-head, despite knowing that the technology is there in theory.

Our next move was to try a similar club (a Callaway Rogue) but with a super light steel shaft. John immediately preferred the feel of this but we noticed the ball flight was far too low costing him distance.

We then struck Gold by putting a slightly slimmer head, the Callaway Rogue Pro (nearer his Cobra’s but still packed with modern technology) onto the same shaft. Immediately the ball flight was higher and strike considerably sweeter for John as seen in his 1.40 SMASH factor and 9 yards longer carry.

Reed more about it

There's nothing quite like turning on the TV at the beginning of April to watch the very best golfers tackle one of the hardest courses in the world. With pristine fairways, treacherous greens and flowers in full bloom, Augusta National looked nothing short of a golfing paradise once again over the weekend.

The 2018 Masters tournament had it all. From Tom Watson's highlight reel Par-3 Contest triumph and Finau's ankle popping hole-in-one celebration on Wednesday, to Garcia's four shots into the water on the 15th the first day proper, to Jordan Spieth's near course record and Patrick Reed's maiden Major victory on Sunday.

Each day had its own story but the week belonged to the young American who collected his first Green Jacket thanks to belittling Augusta's par-5s over the first three days (-13 for 12 holes) and a series of clutch putts on Sunday afternoon, none more so than on his final two holes to win by one from Rickie Fowler.

European Tour heads to Spain

The European Tour heads to Centro Nacional de Golf in Spain. Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston is the defending champion, having won the event two years ago.

It’s the first time it has been hosted at the Madrid-based course since 2007. Following its absence from the European Tour last year, it takes over from the iconic Valderrama, which hosted the event in 2016.

The Royal Spanish Golf Federation have decided fans will be able to attend for free this week and defending champion ‘Beef’ was supportive of the idea, as he said: “It’s great that it is a free event for the fans because it is going to generate an amazing atmosphere.”

The winning score was 16 under-par when Charl Schwartzel won in 2007, and the winning score is likely to be similar this week.

The player who is most likely to dominate a strong following is world number four John Rahm. The home favorite, who finished fourth at The Masters despite a slow start, was a member of Centre Nacional de Golf during his teenage years, and will hope to make his advantage count.

Players to watch:

Jon Rahm – The world number four headlines on home soil this week looking to win his third European Tour title after a strong showing at Augusta

Rafael Cabrera-Bello – Coming off the back of a positive week at the Masters; where he briefly shared the lead during round two, will be looking to build on his steady start to the season on home soil.

Paul Dunne – The Irishman has had some impressive results in recent weeks. Dunne, the current British Masters champion, finished T8th at the Houston Open and will be looking to carry his momentum in the European tour.

No penalty

Golf can be a frustrating game at the best of times, but incurring a penalty stroke when you’ve accidentally done something wrong seems very unfair, especially when that one stroke could be the difference between getting a handicap cut or not.

Current Rules
Under the current Rules of Golf, if you accidentally nudge your ball while addressing it you incur a one-stroke penalty and must replace it (18-2). The only exception relates to if it is accidentally moved in the process of marking it. In this case, it must be replaced and there is no penalty (20-1).

New Rules from 2019
The new proposed rule (13.1c) states there will no longer be a penalty for accidentally causing your ball to move on the green and you must replace it on its original spot.
